First Sumner medal awarded Danny Boys honoured as Cashmere Tech win English Cup By Gordon Findlater CASHMERE Technical left back Danny Boys has put his name in the history books by winning the first ever Steve Sumner Medal after being named English Cup final MVP. Boys, 32, was presented the medal following Tech’s 2-0 win over Ferrymead Bays in the final at English Park on Saturday. The go-ahead for the new medal was given late last week by the Sumner family. Steve’s son Carlos Sumner was on hand to present Boys with the medal. “I only found out about it after the game. It was a massive honour to win the medal. I know how much Steve meant to football in New Zealand and Christchurch,” said Boys. The left-footed defender moved to Christchurch from the United Kingdom in early 2013 and has been a regular for Tech since then. He met Sumner briefly on half a dozen occasions. Sumner captained the All Whites to their first ever World Cup apperance in 1982. “I got to have a couple of beers with him at the No 4 Bar a few years ago. He always seemed like a really down-to-earth guy. He absolutely loved football and was always asking how you were

getting on,” said Boys. Boys put Tech in front in the 22nd-minute when he curled a free kick from 25m out into the bottom left corner. Tech went on to win the match 2-0 with Lyle Matthysen scoring in the second half.
“I thought Aaron Clapham was going to take it, so when he offered it to me I made the most of it,” said Boys. Part of the decision to create the medal for the English Cup MVP was due to the final always being played during Blue
September – the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s national awareness month. In February, Sumner passed away after losing a battle with prostate cancer and was a Prostate Cancer Foundation ambassador.

WHAT A great week for Cashmere High sports teams (see pages 11, 12). The boys basketball team had a thrilling win over Christ’s College in the Thompson Trophy final, while the school’s girls football team won the first X1 competition, beating St Andrew’s in the final. It was a sweet victory over St Andrew’s after the Cashmere girls had brushed aside Rangiora High in the semi-finals. The football team is in Nelson this week for a tournament. The basketball was as good as it gets. Down by seven in the final quarter, Cashmere dug deep with Mitch Mahon hitting the matchwinning basket with 15sec to go. Cashmere coach Ben Sheat said it was a great reward for all their hard work and to do it in front of such a big Cashmere crowd was “awesome”. – Barry Clarke

Mountain bike trails cause friction By Sarla Donovan THE FUTURE of mountain bike trails in Urumau Reserve are in doubt as a rift within the Lyttelton Reserves Management Committee deepens. The trails have been developed since 2009, but committee secretary Brian Downey said there were too many, and they could be affecting the stability of the reserve’s steep hillside slopes. He said the issue of mountain bike trails had caused a “very definite split” among committee members and up to two thirds of the 16 members were against them. The city council is currently looking at a plan to improve recreational opportunities in the reserve, increase public access, enhance birdlife and control weeds. A city council leaflet outlining the reserve development proposal was sent to nearby residents. Submissions on the plan closed yesterday. A separate strip of paper saying “if you don’t vote NO you approve the new plan” was also placed in letter boxes. Fooling about leads to shocks at Hillmorton High By Julia Evans TOMFOOLERY PUT three high school students in hospital after they received electric shocks. The Hillmorton High School students were taken to Christchurch Hospital last Tuesday after receiving electric shocks during a woodwork class. The students were back in class by Wednesday morning. School staff called an ambulance after the trio showed up at the sick bay reporting their injuries. St John arrived at the school on Tankerville Rd at about 12.14pm. Principal Ann Brokenshire said, although the boys were able to walk, the school did not “muck around” considering the nature of the incident. However, Ms Brokenshire said it was caused by “tomfoolery” from the students. “This is what happens when you fool around with a chord in a socket,” she said. The classroom was shut down following the incident, as the power immediately went out. WorkSafe has now deemed it safe to reopen. While the school would ensure the students learn the consequences of their actions, Ms Brokenshire said: “Our main concern is, of course, the health and well-being of the students.”

Wastewater work will affect traffic WESTMORLAND residents are being warned to expect traffic delays in the coming weeks. The city council is about to start on the new south-east Halswell wastewater project in the area. Traffic delays will affect motorists between the Cashmere Rd and Penruddock Rise intersection and the south end of Hendersons Rd. City council project manager Kylie Hills said stop-go traffic control would be put in place at the Cashmere Rd and Penruddock Rise intersection, and at two pipe-trench road crossings in and near the Hendersons Rd and Cashmere Rd intersection. “We’re asking those that travel through this area to allow an extra five minutes for their journeys,” she said. But Ms Hills assured the city council would get the work done as quickly as possible. “While there will be some disruption to motorists the long-term benefits to local residents in the area will outweigh the traffic delays in the short term.” The Cashmere Rd branch of the South East Halswell Wastewater scheme will divert

flows from Westmorland to a new pump station being built on Sparks Rd. This will take wastewater flows away from older downstream infrastructure and into other parts of the network. It will allow at risk infrastructure to be renewed without interruption of residents’ wastewater services as well as increasing the capacity of the
local network. The overall scheme involves constructing a pressure sewer network which is more than 8km long and up to 450mm in diameter, along with constructing a new pump station on Sparks Rd and carrying out upgrades to existing pump stations. The wastewater pipelines are being constructed in three sections – the first section runs
through south-east Halswell from Kennedys Bush Rd to the new Sparks Rd pump station. The second section will run between the pump station at the bottom of Penruddock Rise to the new pump station on Sparks Rd. And the third section is from the new pump station on Sparks Rd to an existing pump station on Wigram Rd.

This factor has led the Lyttelton Mountain Bike Club, Lyttelton Reserve Management Committee, city council and Lyttelton Port Company to work together over the past eight years to create the current trail network. The trails through the pine forest have been hand-dug by bikers at an average rate of 2m/h, but are now also being enjoyed by walkers and runners. The generally steep terrain
means the trails are suitable for intermediate or advanced riders. They vary from smooth, bermed trails to tight, twisty, single tracks and steeper, swooping, technical trails. There’s something for everyone, a part from beginners, which is something I’d love to see changed. There’s great potential to add an easier ‘XC’ trail on the eastern side of the reserve and the proposed development plan

supports the idea of joining the LPC track to the Urumau traverse track, forming a wide, low-angle, shared use loop track. There is already much excitement for such a familyfriendly loop track, but strong community support and funding are still needed for these initiatives to be realised. If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to check out the trails and take in the stunning views, whether by bike or on foot. Signs point the way from the end of Foster Tce, but the best trail map and information is available via the Trailforks website or smartphone app. If you’re a local rider, I’d encourage you to join the Lyttelton Mountain Bike Club (www.lytteltonmtb.club). Liquor ban plan By Bridget Rutherford A PERMANENT alcohol ban could be put in place on the streets around AMI Stadium and Horncastle Arena. Vbase catering general manager Mark Bodman said people drinking in the car parks and on the streets near both venues before going into events was a problem. “This leads, on occasion, to Mark Bodman guests either being refused entry for being intoxicated or being allowed access as the signs of intoxication may not become necessarily observable until 15 to 30min after consuming alcohol and, by the time the signs are evident, they have then entered the licensed premises.” He said currently Vbase was unable to stop people drinking in those areas. “Issues we have experienced includes assault of Vbase staff and members of the public, public nuisance, littering and lewd behaviour.” He said there had been one
incident of assault on July 14 last year, where a Vbase security guard was assaulted, and so was a staff member. It happened during a Broods concert at Horncastle. “The staff member suffered minor wounds and was treated by medical personnel. The patron was evicted and trespassed, and subsequently arrested.” Mr Bodman said they wanted the ban to cover the same area as the temporary ban during New Zealand Trotting Cup Day, which is bordered by Lincoln Rd, Moorhouse Ave, Blenheim Rd, Matipo St and Wrights Rd. The city council is investigating the idea. City council acting head of strategic policy Gavin Thomas said the community governance team would now do a preliminary analysis into whether the ban would be appropriate. Group hopes queen will help save hospital from possible demolition By Gabrielle Stuart A GROUP fighting to save The Princess Margaret Hospital from possible demolition has taken the battle right to the top – writing to Queen Elizabeth to ask for her support. The Save PMH group has been campaigning to have the hospital buildings kept open, and wants community health services to be based there. A decision about the future of the site has not yet been made, as Canterbury District Health Board mental health services are still based there. Save PMH chairman Lee Sampson said the group wrote to the queen to get more “public accountability” around the future of the hospital. He was concerned a decision would be made behind closed doors, without other options for the site being explored. The letter asked for the queen’s support, mentioning her visit to the hospital in 1977 as part of her Jubilee Tour, and that the hospital was named after her sister,

The letter said: “NZ is still a young nation and Christchurch has already lost so much heritage fabric over the last six to seven years through the earthquakes, therefore we would be extremely grateful of your support in asking the CDHB to at least explore other options for TPMH buildings and services prior to them sending
in the wrecking ball and our community losing this jewel in our crown forever.” Some of the buildings at the hospital had structural damage from the earthquakes, while others only needed cosmetic repairs. The building ratings range from less than 15 per cent of the New Building Standard to 100 per cent.

So it seems only natural he’d want to set up a specialist dog photography business. For the last few weeks, he’s been taking photos of dogs and their owners on Sumner Beach. The Dutch national, who is here on a working visa, has a part-time job Bart Vandendoel at Hanafins at Northlands Shopping Centre, and does photography work the rest of the time, including weddings, portraits and landscapes – but animal photography is his passion. Living in Sumner, Mr Vandendoel said is an animal photographers dream. “When I came here, I was thinking all those people with all those dogs running over the beach; it looked like the perfect place for me to continue doing what I love.” “For three weeks, I just kept going to the beach and taking photos for people and

Poet wins hoard of books By Julia Evans HILMORTON HIGH School student John Hunter has a way with words. One of his poems, A New World, won the school library a hoard of books from the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. John was selected as one of only six students in the country to win the prize.

By Andrew King CASHMERE HIGH’S girls football team won the first XI competition against St Andrew’s College 3-1 on Wednesday. It was a tough road to the final for Cashmere, who drew Rangiora High in the semi-final, one of the top teams in the country. They managed a 3-1 win over them to make the final. Coach Mark Atkins said St Andrew’s were a difficult team to play, but he thought his girls thoroughly deserved the win.
SPORTS “Two of the main stand-outs were Beth Elliott and Whitney Frame, who both play in the central midfield. Their distribution was immaculate and their work rate was the highest I have ever seen at that level,” Atkins said. He also praised goalkeeper Sarah-Grace Thompson. “She kept us in the game with some outstanding saves,” he said. They have now turned their
attention to the Gary Sowden Tournament in Nelson, which kicked off yesterday. Cashmere are in the same pool as Middleton Grange and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, along with Wainuiomata High School. “The team is looking very fit and looking good for this week,” Atkins said. The tournament finishes on Thursday.

Rugby League World Cup trophy inspires students By Andrew King THE RUGBY League World Cup kicks off next month and last week north-west students got a look at what the Kiwis will be gunning for – the Paul Barrière Trophy. The competition will feature 14 men’s and six women’s international teams. It will be hosted by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Hillmorton head of PE and former Black Ferns captain Mel Ruscoe said it was an op-
portunity to raise the profile of the sport. “It was a chance for the team to make some connections and, for many, a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the cup,” she said. First held in 1954, the 2017 Rugby League World Cup will be the 15th time the historic tournament has been played. The first of 28 games will begin on October 28, with the final to be played on December 2 at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.

Down by seven in the final quarter, Cashmere dug deep with Mitch Mahon hitting the match-winning basket with 15sec to go. Cashmere coach Ben Sheat said it was a great reward for all their hard work and to do it in front of such a big Cashmere crowd was “awesome”. “The game was a real battle as expected. The boys stuck with the processes and kept believing in our systems and managed to pull it out in the last 15sec,” Sheat said. Connor McLaughlin collected 19 points, seven assists and five rebounds, backed up by Ruben Stanley with 11 points and Nic Wenmoth with 10. Defensively, Cashmere’s Oki Tilaia stuck like glue to Christ’s best player Max De Geest, something Sheat said was a major key to the victory. The team has savoured their ‘Canterbury Champs’ title for a few days before turning their

MUSHROOM, CHICKEN AND LEEK PIE Ingredients 3 sheets Flaky puff pastry 30g Butter 1 tsp Crushed garlic 250g White Button Mushrooms 350g Chicken, cooked, shredded and finely sliced 1 Leek, finely sliced ¼ cup Flour 1 cup Chicken stock, hot 1 cup Milk 1 tsp Wholegrain mustard 1 Egg, beaten with 1 tbsp milk Directions Preheat the oven to 190deg C. Use 1½ sheets of the pastry to line a 25cm pie tin or similar, trimming to fit neatly. Chill lined tin and extra pastry until required. In a medium saucepan, heat the butter and saute garlic, mushrooms and leek for 4-5min until the leeks are soft and fragrant. Add the chicken and sprinkle over the flour. Add the stock, stirring well, until smooth. Add the milk and season with
